This presentation will start with an overview of the various PON services and look at the trend for PON service deployment.

This presentation will start with an overview of the various PON services and look at the trend for PON service deployment. Then a quick explanation of the key differences between broadband versus PON power meters will follow and looking at the situations where you can and cannot use a Broadband PM and why. We will look at the challenges faced around the final fiber connection to a subscriber’s premises, specifically how to establish if you have the correct drop fiber and terminal connection, and the technology embedded in the transmission equipment (PON-ID) that can help confirm and troubleshoot issues.

Niki studied Engineering Physics and worked as a SW programmer in the public sector. After moving into industry, he worked for a manufacturer of fiber optic connectors, systems and splicing devices. As an application engineer, he supported the development of products for customers from various industries. Activities included up-skilling of technicians migrating from copper to fiber. The practical experience supported him on his way into product management, where he took on the role of PLM for FTTx solutions. Niki joined VIAVI as Product Manager for Essential Fiber Optic Test Tools with a focus on growth areas such as Next Gen PON and Test Process Automation.

Gary Bolton serves as president and CEO of the Fiber Broadband Association — the largest trade association dedicated to all-fiber-optic broadband. Prior to FBA, Gary held executive management positions at two successful venture-backed high-tech start-ups as well as at large publicly traded companies in marketing, product line management and public policy. Gary is also currently an adjunct professor in business administration and management science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and he holds an MBA from Duke University and a BS in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University.
